1. Translations and definitions of these terms are complex. To give one example, qi is also rendered as “pneuma,” “vapor,” “energy,” and in other ways. While “breath” covers some, but not all, of the senses of qi, this translation has the advantage of preserving the correspondence between the qi of the Dao and the qi of the human being, which manifests itself primarily in breathing.
